An Introduction to Modern Homemaking
In a time where the modern woman works as an equal to the male species, homemaking is a lifestyle that has dwindled down. The peak of homemaking was during the medieval era of Europe. During that time the norm was for women to be solely responsible for the care of the home and the children. Today, that social standard is frowned upon and considered sexist or defamatory to women. Do not be mistaken, I do not believe America, or the world as a whole, should go back to this type of societal structure. I believe that the skills that are learned by being a homemaker possesses knowledge that upholds a sophistication that should be widespread in America.
A BIT ABOUT ME
My birthday is at the end of summer, a month before the Fall solstice. As a child I wanted to host parties for all of my school friends to attend but I was never really good at keeping up with them and I expected my mother to plan it. Guess that’s why it didn’t always happen. My mother was a single mother while I was growing up, meaning she took care of all the household chores until I was old enough to help out a bit. I learned to clean dishes, floors, walls, and a bit of organization. When I was young I protested cleaning but I find it therapeutic as an adult.
Perks & Benefits. Mastering the role of the Homemaker has so many benefits you’d think it was a “super-food”. The best way that I like to describe being a homemaker is like being a character in Star Wars who has their one and only ship. They can decorate the inside however they like and can organize it in whatever way works best for themselves. And if you think about it, those robots that Jedis tend to have with them in their ships are like homemakers. They have all the knowledge of the vessel, know where everything is & goes, and are at the beck ‘n call for the Jedi. Respectfully, homemaking can be like that- although it sounds a bit like slavery, but in Star Wars, they’re just robots. Perks:
(1) Advanced leisure time; once the duties of the house are done, you can do whatever you want. Eventually you'll get so in the rhythm that you’ll start finishing early. Then you can go get a mani-pedi, watch a movie, and gossip with the girlies. (2) Power in the home; when you know every crevice of the house, you’ll gain an immense amount of respect from the other residents. (3) Educational paths; new homemakers will have sooo much to learn about home-care that the job requires research to actually do any of the work. From fixing the roof to preparing dinner, homemakers have to discover new ways to keep the home safe and in good condition. (4) A community; homemaking is not as popular as it used to be but America has over 47,000 homemakers that you can talk to about your mental health, hard to solve problems, and to just be social.
Homemakers know where the storage locations are, hidden spots, tricks like how to open the second floor closet that only opens when you lift up at the same time, and holds the key to having a home vs. having a place to live. You’ll see me write and say that a lot- “having a home vs. having a place to live’. There are big differences between somebody who resides in a house, condo, or apartment and somebody who has made the house, condo, or apartment a home. In a home, the space is comfortable with decor & Feng Shui. The person maximizes the space and completes the task of the space with ease, strategically. A place where somebody simply resides is a space where they spend most of the time away from the space, it’s not decorated and has a Feng Shui that is unsettling. They don’t know how to store a food pantry for the winter in a way that puts the right amount of food so nothing spoils. They may not have the time to build a detergent rack in the laundry room so it has a neat spot that is innovative. The difference between a house and a home is a homemaker- Somebody who knows the space, inside & out.
Modern Homemaking. It is a beautiful thing. It’s not the standard like in the 13 century, but many households practice this lifestyle. It is finding the best solutions to property care. It is doing extensive research in multiple fields of professions. Homemakers are not just homemakers, they’re plumbers, chefs, painters, and electricians. They learn new skills to better care for the inhabitants and you do not have to be a housewife to do it. You can do it alone, performing the research and doing the tasks after work- like a hobby. You can do it with roommates; they work and pay bills, while you cook, maintain the space, and enjoy your leisure time. Today, homemaking is a lot easier because of the internet and the surplus of the country. In the medieval time, homemaking was as essential as life or death because if food was stored properly the family could starve. Without a homemaker children would have to raise themselves because the father was obviously working. Women would be trained as young women to be skilled and knowledgeable homemakers to be respected in their communities and to find a husband. No man wanted a woman who couldn’t take care of a home back then. In more current times, a woman could only know the basics of home-care and still be considered a valuable mate because women are allowed to work now. That income has replaced stay-at-home duties. But I am here to switch that around.
CONCLUSION
With this blog I intend to teach people all over the world on how to properly maintain a home. Homemaking is much more than sweeping, taking out the trash, and preparing dinner. It’s fixing the plumbing issues without calling a plumber. It’s sewing new clothes instead of buying $200 retailer jeans. It’s taking inventory of canned goods to ensure a budget is met for the winter. I intend to learn a lot along the way but together, we will make the homemakers of the world some of the best providers to have ever lived & bring to life The Modern Homemaker.
